Concerns for missing man

1 min read

Police and search and rescue teams are searching a section of the Napier-Taupo Rd after a crashed vehicle was found with the driver missing.

There are concerns for the safety of the 23-year-old driver, Aaron Vandenburg, who has a medical condition that makes him disorientated.  Police say he may have wandered away from the crashed car and may not know where he is.

Mr Vandenburg is from Hawke’s Bay and was travelling last night  from Rotorua back to his family home in Hastings.  His car was discovered crashed by friends early this afternoon near the Te Haroto summit on SH5.  There has been no sign of Mr Vandenburg since last night in Rotorua.

His car was found stuck in a fence and had a flat tyre.  There were no obvious signs of blood in the vehicle so it is not known if Mr Vandenburg was injured.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who was travelling on the Napier-Taupo Rd from 10pm last night to around 5pm today who might have seen Mr Vandenburg.

He is described as a Caucasian, around 1.9m tall (6ft 4), of slim build and with light brown hair.  He was driving a blue Audi four-door car.

Police were also asking friends of Mr Vandenburg to contact them urgently if they have seen him or if they know where he is.  He needs medication which he does not have with him.

Anyone with information about Mr Vandenburg should contact Hawke’s Bay Police on 06 8310815.
