Crime continues to decrease in Central District

2 min read

Recorded crime statistics released today for the 2012/2013 financial year show that crime continues to trend downward in the Central Police District.

The statistics show that 27,812 offences were recorded in the 12 months from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2013. That is a reduction of 696 offences which equates to a decrease of 2.4 percent. Over the past six financial years crime in Central District has continued to decrease.

Superintendent Russell Gibson, Central District Commander says the overall decrease is pleasing but one of the main highlights for the District is the decrease in burglary offending.

"It's encouraging to see that burglary rates are down 6.6 percent and this particular offending is a big focus for us. Being burgled is intrusive and upsetting and from time to time we do see an increase; however we will continue to target this area and work with communities to prevent this offending," says Mr Gibson.

"The pubic play a key role in deterring opportunistic offending. Taking some simple steps such as securing your property and taking advantage of Operation SNAP — an online initiative aimed at preventing and reducing property and burglary offending, could save you a lot of stress and worry in the long run."

Highlights for Central District were:

  • Unlawful entry with intent/Burglary/Break and enter — down 6.6 percent or 309 offences
  • Robbery, extortion and related offences — down 15.1 percent or 18 offences
  • Public order offences (including public disorder) — down  6.4 percent or 180 offences

"Preventing crime is a whole-of-community effort and the downward trend in crime is promising but we still have a long way to go. With the persistence and dedication of our staff as well as the excellent work of communities and Maori Wardens we can continue to prevent and reduce crime," says Mr Gibson.

Note: On 1 July 2013, the Central Police District went from 6 areas to 3. The three Areas incorporate the Territorial Local Authorities of Taranaki, Whanganui, and Manawatu. Policing services in the District are managed by three Area Commanders.
