An alleged offender whose dangerous driving put members of the public at risk has been arrested in Bombay this morning.
Acting Inspector Dave Readings, Tāmaki Makaurau Shift Commander, says around 2.15am Police were notified of a stolen vehicle traveling in the Takanini area.
“Units spotted the vehicle as it was heading north on Great South Road and signalled for the driver to stop.”
The vehicle failed to do so and accelerated away.
“The driver was allegedly acting erratically and reaching speeds of up to 120kmph in residential areas.
“Units elected not to pursue, and the vehicle entered the Southern Motorway, where Police lost sight,” Acting Inspector Readings says
Around 10.53am, the vehicle was spotted in Papakura.
The driver has seen Police in the area, and sped off onto the Southern Motorway.
“The vehicle has exhibited dangerous behaviours; overtaking others and reaching speeds of around 190kmph.
“At several points the vehicle has exited the motorway and performed u-turns to avoid road spikes set up ahead,” Acting Inspector Readings says.
Eagle monitored the vehicle as it exited at Ridge Road, Bombay where it appeared to take a wrong turn before coming to a stop.
“Police arrived and successfully blocked the vehicle from leaving,” Acting Inspector Readings says.
“The two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without issue.”
Acting Inspector Readings says it was fortunate the driver did not cause a crash or injure any innocent members of the public.
“This person had no regard for other road users and has created significant risk with their manner of driving.
“It is a miracle no one was hurt or injured.”
A 33-year-old man and a 19-year-old man are in Police custody, with charges pending.
