Death in Rotorua not suspicious

At approximately 12.45pm on Sunday, 10 January, a man was found dead at his home in the Tihiotonga suburb of Rotorua home by a family member.

The man has been formally identified as Judge James Weir, aged 65, who presided over the courtrooms of Rotorua District Court for 15 years. He left his court judge position in April 2015 to take up the role of Chairman of the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority.

A post mortem examination was carried out today. His death is not being treated as suspicious and his death has been referred to the Coroner.
