Police have charged a man following a firearms incident in Raglan yesterday.

Around 8.45am, Police were called with a report that a person had been injured with a firearm on Whaanga Road. Police responded immediately, and a 54-year-old man was arrested.

The victim received minor injuries and was assessed by ambulance at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Rahul Badri, of the Waikato West CIB, says immediately following the arrest Police executed a search warrant and conducted a scene examination.

“As a result, we located and seized 50 rounds of ammunition. Further extensive enquiries were carried out today, and we have successfully recovered the shotgun that was allegedly used during the incident.”

The man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow [6 July], charged with committing a dangerous act with intent to injure, unlawfully possessing a firearm, and unlawfully possessing ammunition. Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this matter.

“I am pleased we were able to take a firearm off the streets and hold this alleged offender to account – this isn’t just a positive outcome for the victim, but also for the wider Raglan community,” says Detective Sergeant Badri.

“This investigation involved significant effort by both frontline staff and detectives, and I would like to acknowledge their excellent work in bringing this incident to a quick resolution.”
