This morning , Inspector Mike Wright, Wellington District Road Policing Manager was astonished and disappointed to read the results of the activity of the Traffic Alcohol Group overnight.

"During the night a total of 1,028 motorists, were stopped at checkpoints in Masterton," said Inspector Mike Wright.

"Of those motorists, three are facing charges relating to drink driving.  Regrettably, one of those drivers was a 14 year old youth.  He returned a reading of 135 mcgms of alcohol per litre of breath," said Inspector Wright.

The youth has been referred to Youth Aid and his vehicle was impounded.

"Over the school holidays, it is important that parents know what their children are up to," said Inspector Wright.  "This young man put not just himself but many other people at risk".

Whilst acknowledging it is the festive season Inspector Wright reminds people that, if you are going to have a drink, have a sober driver to get you home. "We want don't want any unopened presents under the Christmas Tree this year".
