High five in focus

1 min read

A day-long focus on the 'Fatal Five' contributors to road crashes and trauma is being run by Police, Auckland Transport and Plunket throughout Auckland City District today.

Alcohol and drugged driving, speed, restraints, dangerous, careless and high risk driving will get lots of attention at identified locations.

"We will be utilising a range of road policing vehicles and equipment to educate road users and detect those who, for whatever reason, are not fulfilling their obligations as safe motorists or pedestrians," said acting Inspector Marty Brown.

"The Police mobile command truck will be used as a high visibility hub and support vehicle stationed at Auckland Zoo in the morning and Britomart in the afternoon. AT, Plunket and Police staff will be on hand to deliver road safety material to motorists and passing pedestrians."

Mr Brown said all motorists stopped by staff involved in Op Fatal Five will be breath tested.

"We are determined to, as best we can, keep our roads and the people who use them, safe. We make no apology for insisting motorists treat their fellow road users with courtesy and share the city's arterial routes and suburban streets responsibly.

"By focusing on what we know to be the main contributors to road crashes and trauma, we hope to enlighten and remind people to travel safely across and around the city and within the conditions of their licences, in accordance with the road rules while ensuring all passengers are adequately restrained."
