Police have launched a homicide investigation after an 18-year-old died in hospital following an assault at the intersection of Wellesley St and Queen Street in the early hours of Saturday morning (January 27).

Eli Francis Holtz was assaulted when the vehicle he was a passenger in stopped at the traffic lights on Wellesley Street West and Queen St at 3.15am.

He was taken to Auckland Hospital and put on life support.

He died at 8.45pm last night.

A Post Mortem Examination is being carried out today and the Police investigation continues, including reviewing CCTV footage.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and will reappear in the Auckland District Court Tuesday 30 January 2018, when the charges are expected to be upgraded.

As part of ongoing enquiries Police would like to speak to three men who were at the intersection at the time and may have witnessed the assault (photo attached) and who Police believe caught a bus to Takapuna a short time later.

Police would also like to speak to the occupants of a white Toyota Prius that was behind the vehicle the victim was in at the time of the assault (photo attached).
