Hunting over Labour weekend? Take extra care

2 min read

Hunters heading out this Labour weekend are encouraged to take extra care.

In the Pureora area, hunters can expect to see Police and Department of Conservation (DOC) staff carrying out a joint operation focused on hunter safety, firearms compliance and permit checks.

The operation aims to engage with hunters, promote safe and responsible hunting practices, and help ensure everyone heading into the backcountry returns home safely.

DOC Maniapoto Operations Manager Graham Kimber says Labour weekend is a popular time for hunters to make the most of the spring weather and access to public conservation land.

"The vast majority of hunters do the right thing. Having the correct permit, knowing where you're hunting and planning ahead helps keep everyone safe and protects access to these great hunting opportunities."

DOC and New Zealand Police staff will be out in the Pureora area over Labour Weekend undertaking routine education and compliance activities.

"These checks are as much about engaging with hunters as they are about compliance. It's an opportunity to answer questions, share information and help ensure everyone enjoys a safe weekend outdoors.

"We want people to have a successful trip, return home safely and continue enjoying the incredible hunting opportunities available on public conservation land."

Dave Martin, Manager: Rural Police, says the operation is also an opportunity to reinforce key firearms safety messages.

“New Zealand's firearms safety rules apply whenever and wherever you use a firearm. Hunting trips should be memorable for the right reasons, and that starts with putting safety first.

“Always identify your target beyond all doubt and be certain of what is in front of it and beyond it. If you're not sure, don't shoot.

“Many firearms incidents involving hunters occur because a target has been mistaken for something else. Taking a few extra seconds to properly assess what you're looking at can save a life.

“We want everyone heading into the bush this Labour weekend to enjoy themselves and return home safely to their whānau.”

Police and DOC encourage hunters to ensure they carry the appropriate documentation, follow the Firearms Safety Code, and respect other people using public conservation land.

Hunters can obtain a free hunting permit and find information about hunting in Pureora Forest Park at www.doc.govt.nz.
