1 min read

Taumarunui Police are continuing their inquiries into the death of a man whose body was found in a shallow grave yesterday in the township of Ongarue.

"There are four scene examinations underway; two at residential properties, and one at the grave site and a vehicle of interest.  The examinations are expected to continue over the next 48 hours," says Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby.

"Another key focus for us today is to continue interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events prior to the man's death."

The Police Dive Squad is also helping with the investigation and is tasked with searching the Ongarue River for potential evidence.

A post mortem is due to take place this afternoon. The deceased is believed to be in his late 50s and Police will not be releasing any further details until a formal identification has taken place and next of kin have been informed.

A team of 30 officers including forensic specialists are currently working on the investigation.

"We are keen to speak to anyone that saw any suspicious behaviour or activity in the Ongarue area between Friday 8 November and Wednesday 13 November. We encourage anyone who has any information to contact Police immediately," says Detective Senior Sergeant Kirby.

A 57-year-old Taumarunui man has been arrested and charged with murder and is appearing in the Taumarunui District Court today.

Further updates will be released once more information becomes available.
