Large crowds expected at Eden Park for national remembrance event

2 min read

Police in Auckland are expecting a crowd of thousands to attend tomorrow’s National Remembrance Service.

The main event to remember those who tragically lost their lives in the Christchurch terror attacks will be held in Christchurch, but will be live streamed at services throughout the country, including at Auckland’s Eden Park.

The event at Eden Park will be held at 10am, Friday March 29. The venue will be open to the public from 9am, and will close at about 4pm.

Heavy traffic and congestion around Eden Park is expected, so Police ask people to be patient and give themselves plenty of time to get to and from the event safely.

Several roads around Eden Park will be closed and a council Traffic Management Plan will also be in place.

Reimers Ave, Cricket Ave, Walters Ave and part of Sandringham Road directly surrounding Eden Park will be closed and cordoned off, meaning residents in those areas who leave in their vehicles will not be able to re-enter in their vehicles until the event has finished. They will still be able to travel on foot.

We understand this may be an inconvenience to some residents, but ask they understand the need for security at this one-off event given recent events.

Police appreciate and are thankful for their understanding.

Public transport will be operating and Police strongly advise people to consider public transport options instead of driving.

Police will be present at the event for community reassurance and as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.

Police want to ensure all people attending the live-stream of the National Remembrance Service and the event at Eden Park are safe, feel safe and are treated with respect.

We also want to reassure the public not to be alarmed when they see Police officers armed.

Police have been armed throughout the country since the attack in Christchurch.

This is a precautionary measure to keep the public and our officers safe.

For those attending events around the country, we ask you to remain vigilant, please be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. If you see something suspicious report it immediately to Police or event security staff.
