Man dies after three car crash near Levin

1 min read

A 76-year-old man has died following a three car crash on State Highway 1, Ohau, near Levin just after 2:15pm this afternoon.

Preliminary indications suggest that a north bound Toyota Hilux has crossed the centre line and crashed into a south bound Suzuki Swift before colliding into a BMW that the deceased was driving. Four people were involved in the crash; two in the BMW and one each in the Swift and Hilux.

“The BMW driver was airlifted to Wellington hospital but died shortly after arriving. Two people sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Palmerston North Hospital and the fourth person received minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment,” says officer in charge of the Central District Highway Patrol Group, Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery.

“Both lanes of the highway were closed for a period of time so Police could safely clear the road and examine the scene, however the highway was re-opened a short while ago.”

Police will not release any further details about the deceased until his next of kin has been informed.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and continuing to make inquiries and speak to witnesses.

"We are keen to speak to anyone that witnessed the crash and we encourage them to contact Police,” says Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery.

Anyone that witnessed the crash or has any information is asked to contact the Palmerston North Police on (06) 351 3600. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
