Today’s graduation at the Royal New Zealand Police College brings with it a special milestone for women in Police.

Wing 321, graduating Thursday 13 December, sees the number of full-time equivalent female Constabulary officers reach 2000 for the first time in New Zealand Police’s history.

“Greater gender and ethnic diversity are important priorities for Police so it’s fantastic to see more women in our ranks than ever before,” says Commissioner Mike Bush.

“It took more than 50 years for Police to reach 1000 women on the frontline and only 22 years to reach 2000.

“We expect the next thousand to be reached much sooner as we are continuing to recruit more women.

“Police is increasing the numbers of women in our ranks, along with people from all walks of life so we can better represent the communities we serve.

This week’s graduation also marks a further increase to the total number of police officers, with almost 500 more Constabulary working across New Zealand than 18 months ago. The increase is part of the Government’s commitment to funding 1800 additional Police.

“We’re looking to recruit people who are compassionate and empathetic, and who want to make a positive difference in their community. If you are interested, visit www.newcops.govt.nz,” says Commissioner Mike Bush.
