Motorists fined for red light running in major operation this morning

1 min read

Police issued 23 infringement notices to motorists running red lights in a major road policing operation on Auckland’s North Shore this morning.

A further 45 motorists received warnings for running yellow lights and four infringement notices were handed out for vehicles blocking intersections.

One motorist will be prosecuted for running a red light in Onewa Rd this morning and crashing into another car. Both motorists were uninjured.

Operation Road Safe - a joint Police/Auckland Transport/NZTA operation - targeted red and yellow light running at four key high-risk intersections in the Waitemata District during peak morning traffic.

“This morning’s results confirm that some motorists are making poor choices at intersections. Our message is be patient and obey traffic signals. If you don’t, you’re risking serious injury or totally avoidable deaths,” says Inspector Trevor Beggs, Waitemata District Road Policing Manager.

“In Auckland, between 2010-2014, 55 people died and 737 people were seriously injured in intersection crashes. That is far too many families changed forever.”

The operation continues for the next two weeks and coincides with today’s launch of Road Safety Week.

Police and Auckland Transport staff will work together to monitor and identify offending in real time, while Police and AT education and enforcement teams will stop those identified at the roadsides.

The education and enforcement operation aims to reduce crashes at intersections and subsequent traffic congestion.
