New Plymouth Police appeal for witnesses after two suspicious fires

Police are investigating two suspicious fires that occurred in New Plymouth last week on Thursday 31 January.

The first fire started around 6pm in a shelter belt along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway and Cycle Track, near the end of Ellesmere Avenue, Bell Block.

About 8.30pm a second fire started in a detached garage on the corner of Beach Street and Mclean Street, Fitzroy.

A 66-year-old man has been arrested for the garage fire, charged with arson and remanded in custody to appear in New Plymouth District Court on 21 February .

No charges have been laid in relation to the first incident.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the walkway shelter and may have seen anything, specifically a man riding a bicycle around 6pm, to contact Police.
