Not so smooth criminals facing court

1 min read

Quick-thinking officers hit a high-note, arresting five offenders following an aggravated robbery at an east Auckland karaoke bar.

At about 1.40am, staff at a karaoke bar in Somerville alerted Police to an incident involving a group of masked people who had allegedly entered the premises armed with weapons (not firearms) and made demands for cash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson, Counties Manukau CIB, says the group climbed over the counter where they took the till and a number of other items.

“The offenders fled in a vehicle, which was abandoned on Windsong Court.

“From there the offenders got in a stolen Nissan, which was sighted by officers shortly after the aggravated robbery.”

Detective Senior Sergeant McPherson says Police then pursued the vehicle as it travelled through Ōtāra, Manukau and Māngere.

“The vehicle was eventually abandoned in Favona with the occupants attempting to flee on foot, however all five were quickly located and taken into custody.

“We have absolutely no tolerance for this type of crime in our community.

“Employees and business owners deserve to go to work and not be confronted by this violent behaviour.

“Thankfully, no one was injured – this was a great outcome, and we’re pleased to be putting this group before the court to be held accountable.”

An 18-year-old man will appear in Manukau District Court today charged with aggravated robbery, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Four others, aged between 15-17, have been charged with aggravated robbery, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
