One fatality following serious crash near Rolleston

Canterbury Police can confirm there has been one fatality following a serious crash that occurred on State Highway 1 near Rolleston at approximately 4.55pm this afternoon  (4 November 2014).  Canterbury Police’s Serious Crash Unit attended the scene.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash.  The driver and passenger of a car and the driver of a stock truck, both travelling south-bound, were uninjured.  The driver and passenger of a north-bound car are reported to have moderate injuries and were taken to Christchurch Hospital.  The driver and sole occupant of a south-bound car was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes and was confirmed as being deceased at the scene.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police are currently working to ensure next of kin are fully informed and will not release any details of the deceased person until this process has been completed.

Police  investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Police hope to be in a position  to release a further update tomorrow afternoon.
