Canterbury Police successfully disrupted a planned anti-social road user gathering last night, issuing a large number of infringements, green and pink stickers, and impounding vehicles.

The night began in Rangiora, where vehicles had gathered in a commercial carpark before leaving the area and headed towards Swannanoa.

However the group’s movements were monitored by Police, who were waiting with a checkpoint, says Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill.

“The plan was executed skilfully, the group was boxed in at the intersection, and every vehicle was checked by Police.”

Police issued around 50 infringement notices, and about 20 green and pink stickers ordering vehicles off the road.

A number of drivers received a driver’s license suspension for having exceeded the maximum number of demerit points, meaning they are now prohibited from driving for three months.

“Two vehicles were also impounded for previous anti-social road user behaviour incidents.”

Following the checkpoint, the group then moved towards a new spot in Kaiapoi to join other anti-social road users. However, they were also met by Police.

Several green stickers were issued to the new vehicles, due to the conditions of their vehicles.

Staff were one step ahead of the group every time, meaning they were never able to take hold of any one location, says Superintendent Hill.

“The operation went down without a hitch, which comes down to the great planning and execution by staff and I would like to commend all those involved in their efforts.

“Police are sending a message to anyone participating in this unlawful activity – we are ready and waiting, and you can expect us to take action anywhere, anytime.”
