Patience pays off for Police

1 min read

The analogy of the tortoise and the hare has paid off for Police who patiently waited for a speeding vehicle spotted travelling through Whangārei overnight.

Officers observed a black BMW travelling at more than double the speed limit on Cemetery Road at about 1.50am.

Whangārei Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Rene Rakete, says officers lost sight of the vehicle until another unit spotted it a short time later and signalled for it to stop.

“The vehicle has continued on despite us travelling behind with lights and sirens.

“Police have then abandoned the pursuit and opted to do some enquiry work, resulting in the vehicle being found stationary in Raumanga.”

Senior Sergeant Rakete says the Police Dog Unit was hot on the driver’s heel, locating him a short distance away where he was taken into custody without incident.

“Thankfully this incident was brought to a safe conclusion quickly.

“This is another example of excellent decision making by all staff involved, which resulted in the driver arrested and no one injured.”

An 18-year-old male has been summonsed to appear Whangārei District Court at a later date.
