Police aren't ruling out potential for other victims following camp ground arrest

Eastern Waikato Police want to hear from any other potential victims following the arrest of a man for allegedly filming a young girl as she showered at a camping ground over the weekend.

Detective Chris SMITH of the Matamata-Piako CIB said Morrinsville Police have arrested a 42-year-old man following an incident at the Te Aroha Holiday Park in Te Aroha on Saturday.

"A complaint was received that the man was seen filming a young girl as she showered in the pool complex at the park.

"At the time of the incident the girl remained calm and kept her wits about her. She called out to a family member, causing him to run off and her family and management of the park did exactly the right thing by notifying Police."

Mr Smith said naturally, the management of the park were shocked by what happened but the prompt reporting of the incident enabled Police to resolve it in a timely manner.

"One thing of particular concern for investigators is that the alleged offender has been a resident at the park since June last year raising the question that there may have been earlier, similar incidents.

"We'd certainly like to hear from anyone who may have stayed at the park in recent months and witnessed any behaviour of concern which to date hasn't been brought to the attention of Police or camp management."

Mr Smith described the holiday park as a family friendly spot regularly frequented by holidaymakers travelling through the area who are often staying for short periods before moving on.

"For the majority of holidaymaker's parks and camping grounds such as this are venues for positive summer experiences. We would like to do our part in ensuring this remains the case by conducting a thorough investigation in relation to this man's activities.

"To that end, anyone who believes they may have been a potential victim of this man is asked to contact me at the Matamata Police Station on 07 214 4263."

Since his arrest the man's tenancy at the holiday park has been terminated and he has been trespassed from the property. Charged with making an intimate visual recording, he will appear in the Hamilton District Court on 07 January.
