Police disappointed by high failure rate in latest controlled alcohol purchase operation

Police in the Auckland City District have expressed their frustration and disappointment after last weekend’s controlled purchase operation targeting the sale of alcohol to minors and under-age drinking, saw five of seven premises fail.

All seven premises visited during the operation were based in the western area of the Auckland City District, including Mt Eden and Point Chevalier.

Auckland City Police District Prevention Manager, Inspector Gary Davey said the results are concerning.

“Any failure is disappointing but to have five out of seven premises fail suggests that we have a long way to go before those who are issued with licenses fully understand their obligations.

"These premises are seemingly ignoring their responsibilities under the Sale  and Supply of Alcohol Act and we will be doing all we can to ensure that they are dealt with in the strongest possible way.

“It is not acceptable that these premises continue to serve alcohol to minors and, in some of the cases, to a person as young as 16, who had also presented identification which clearly showed their age.”

Police will be prosecuting each premise and the final outcome will be determined by the Alcohol Regulatory Licensing Authority.
