Police encourage rural communities to keep farm bikes and other property secure

1 min read

Waikato Police are investigating a spike in rural farm bike burglaries over the last two months.

Theft of both two wheel and four wheel farm bikes has increased noticeably in the Waikato region, and Police are analysing reported offences to look for both investigative and prevention opportunities.

In the months of March and April 2015, 55 thefts of farm bikes were reported to Waikato Police. May has started in a similar fashion.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Mortimore of the Waikato Police Tactical Crime Unit is urging farmers and members of rural communities to be vigilant and consider the security of bikes and other farm equipment.

"We want to reiterate that security of your farm possessions is important. Police urge farmers and members of rural communities to check security measures on your property and always keep valuables locked away.

Removing keys from farm bikes, and storing bikes in secure facilities is vital to deter optimistic thieves. These bikes are highly valued commodities."

Police encourage residents to report any suspicious activity to Waikato Police on (07) 858 6200. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

For tips and information on keeping rural properties secure, residents are also encouraged to visit the Rural Crime Prevention Hub on the police website:
