1 min read

Counties Manukau Police are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl who died this morning at a house in Favona Rd, Mangere.

Police and Ambulance were called to the address shortly before midday, where Police are continuing to conduct extensive scene examinations.

Detective Inspector Faa Va’aelua says while the exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed it appears the child suffered a fatal gunshot wound. A firearm has been located at the address. We can confirm no-one at the address had a firearms license and inquiries are also ongoing as to how the firearm was obtained.

“We are currently talking to a 25-year-old male in relation to the death and are not looking for anyone else,” says Mr Va’aelua.

“Extended family of the child are yet to be notified of her death so at this stage we’re unable to identify her.

“The Police investigation is in its early stages and that includes establishing whether or not the death was accidental.

“This is a terrible tragedy for the child’s family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. The family has also asked that the media please respect their privacy at this time.”
