A bright and sunny Cup Day at Addington has seen no arrests so far, and Police hope people’s good spirits and behaviour will continue.
“Overall, Police are really happy with the behaviour displayed at Cup Day today, and that people seem to have taken heed of the message to think about alternative transport options, or organise a sober driver,” says Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen.
“Bearing in mind it is still relatively early in the day, with more racing to come, the general feel is there is less intoxication than in previous years, and that people are adopting a safer, more responsible attitude, and choosing not to mix alcohol and driving.”
Two major checkpoints near Addington had screened around 4,000 drivers by 4pm, with just seven people required to undergo a breath screening test. They were found to be under the legal alcohol limit.
As at 4pm, several people had been spoken to regarding breaches of the liquor ban, but there had been no arrests in the race grounds, nor had there been any arrests outside the venue related to Cup Day events.
“It’s been a great day weather-wise, and Police are very pleased that people appear to be taking a responsible approach; drinking in moderation and making smart choices about travel arrangements," Senior Sergeant Larsen says.
"We'd like to see that continue into this evening, ensuring that everyone gets home safely."
