JOINT STATEMENT FROM POLICE AND THE NZ TRANSPORT AGENCY
Police and the NZ Transport Agency are reminding motorists to not stop on the Auckland Harbour Bridge to watch fireworks this New Year’s Eve.
In previous years, Police have attended a number of crashes and near-misses on the Harbour Bridge and on motorway breakdown lanes on the approach to the bridge.
In most cases these were caused by motorists stopping, and sometimes getting out of their vehicles, to watch firework displays.
Police and NZTA would like to keep motorists using Auckland’s motorways safe and to avoid the risk of crashes.
Stopping in this high speed area is inherently dangerous and could lead to a serious or fatal injury collision.
There will be a high visibility of Police Motorways staff around the Harbour Bridge tonight.
Police will be issuing infringements to any motorists found to be stopping on the Harbour Bridge or in motorway breakdown lanes without a genuine reason.
Infringements can range between $150 and $600.
Motorists who are involved in a breakdown or crash are asked to call *555 or 111 immediately.
