Police respond to concerns about illegitimate trades people

1 min read

Hawke’s Bay Police have recently been contacted by locals who expressed concerns about approaches from people offering to do handyman type jobs for them.

It is not uncommon to be approached in this manner, especially at this time of year, and in most cases people are operating a legitimate business. However, concern has been raised by locals that some approaches are not genuine and are attempts to access peoples property for the purpose of committing a crime.

Police recommend that anyone who is approached with offers such as this to check they are legitimate and qualified before letting them do work around your property.

You check their credentials by checking for a listing in the phone book or doing a Google search. You can also phone the relevant trades group or association.

Make sure you obtain a quote for the work from them first and consider getting other quotes before going ahead with the work. Remember, if you have any concerns you can decline the offer.

If you have any concerns you may have been approached in this manner, where the person was not legitimate, or you have concerns for others who have received offers such as this, please let Police know. You can assist in preventing crimes occurring by notifying Police when you have concerns about suspicious behaviours.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to Hawke’s Bay Police on (06) 831 0700. Anonymous information can also be reported to Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
