Christchurch Police are appealing for information about a man who robbed a Hornby dairy at knife-point this morning.

A man is reported to have walked into Barkers Convenience Store in Witham Street at around 10.30 this morning carrying a 30 to 40cm knife.

Detective Wayne Boyd says the man walked behind the counter to the back of the store and confronted the male owner of the shop, who was alone in the premises at the time.

"He forced him to go to the till and has taken a quantity of cash and some cigarettes," he says. "Fortunately the store owner was not injured.

"The offender ran out of the store and made off on foot, heading south on Blankney Street.

"We would like to hear from anyone who saw a person in this area around that time, or who can help us identify who this offender is."

Security camera images from the store have been released. The man is described as a Maori, approximately 180cm (5ft 10in) tall, with a beard and moustache.

He was wearing a dark ski hat with white markings, a green camo top, dark jeans, dark glasses and Adidas shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Boyd on (03) 3637506 or Christchurch police on (03) 3637400.

Alternatively, to provide information anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
