Police seeking information following Thames schoolgirl assault

1 min read

Thames Police investigating an indecent assault against a schoolgirl are commending the victim’s actions while working with local schools to reduce potential risks and appealing to the public for information.

Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes of the Coromandel-Hauraki CIB said Police were contacted following an incident on Mackay St in Thames about 2pm on Tuesday.

“Our victim, a 16-year-old girl, was walking on the eastern side of Mackay St, towards Sealy St, when a man walking towards her suddenly stopped her and subjected her to an indecent assault. Keeping her wits about her, our victim has kneed her attacker in the genitals before fleeing and raising the alarm.

“The offender was described as a clean shaven male with olive skin aged in his late twenties who was reasonably tall and wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.”

Mr Hughes commended the victim’s presence of mind and said victims are encouraged to take the appropriate steps necessary to remove themselves from areas of threat and to raise the alarm as soon as possible.

“We are currently appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information on the identity of the alleged attacker to come forward and contact Thames Police on 07-867 9600. Information can also be left anonamously with the independent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

“While we are investigating yesterday’s incident we are also speaking to local schools raising the issue of students keeping themselves safe and stranger danger.”
