Canterbury Police urge anyone driving to events during Cup and Show Week to remove valuables from their vehicles before they set off.
“In contrast to previous years Police are seeing an increase in theft from vehicles in the Christchurch area. We are not sure what is driving this increase in opportunistic crime but the warmer weather and increased numbers of vehicles, particularly tradies, in the city are definite factors” explained Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel.
Last week Police apprehended and referred a 14 year old youth to Youth Services for a number of dishonesty offences including 12 theft ex-car and three burglaries.
“Opportunistic thieves target vehicles that have not been locked, have valuables on display or are parked in insecure areas for extended periods of time. If you see anyone, no matter how young or old they are, behaving suspiciously around parked vehicles or property call Police straight away by calling 111. Your phone call may stop someone becoming a victim of crime” says Senior Sergeant McDaniel.
This afternoon Christchurch welcomes the All Blacks home after their amazing Rugby World Cup win. If you’re planning on attending make sure you lock you park in a secure area, remove valuables and lock your vehicle. Large crowds are expected and Community Patrols will be working in the area to deter opportunistic thieves from targeting parked vehicles.
“Next week is Cup and Show Week which is one of the busiest times of the year for emergency services, retailers and opportunistic criminals. If you’re planning on driving to any of the events remove any valuables you don’t need before you set off and secure those you need out of sight. Remember to close windows, if you are not leaving any animals in your car, when you reach your destination and lock all of the doors and the boot/tray when you leave.”
“By working together Police and the Community can prevent opportunistic crime. Report suspicious activity and any thefts straight away and take simple steps to deter opportunistic crime. Together we can reduce the odd of you or someone you know becoming a victim of opportunistic thieves and make 2015/16 a summer to remember for the right reasons
