Rescue underway after accident at mine in Waihi

Police, emergency services and mine rescue staff are at the scene of a workplace accident at a Waihi goldmine this evening.

The accident happened at approximately 6.30pm in the Correnso underground mine. The accident saw a large front end loader with one person on board roll down a shaft. Rescuers have been unable to make contact with the driver since the accident. 

The Mine Incident Controller is leading the rescue effort of the underground mine rescue team and Police are working in a co-ordination role at the scene.

While the rescue operation is underway all mining activities in the area have stopped.
