School fire being treated as suspicious

1 min read

An examination of a fire scene at Rotorua Girls’ High School is continuing, but as a result of the initial assessment Police are treating the fire as suspicious and are seeking information from the community.

The fire was first reported to Police at approximately 1.20am this morning (Wednesday, 20 May) by which time the fire was well established. Two classrooms at the school on Old Taupo Road were significantly damaged by the fire.

Police are aware of a number of comments being made on social media about the fire, but are urging the community not to be distracted or influenced by this commentary.

Detective Sergeant Richard Lang said: “The social media comments are being assessed as part of the investigation. However, it is not the only line of enquiry, and it is extremely important that people are not influenced by the comments to the point where they don’t report information they have which might be relevant.

“We want to hear from anyone who may have information, no matter how insignificant it may seem. If you saw or heard anything we urge you to contact us.”

Police also want to hear from any residents in the area who have CCTV systems which may have captured images of use to the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 027 234 8256.
