Search for missing backpacker continues

1 min read

Police have increased their search teams this morning in an effort to locate a missing Chinese backpacker who was last seen at his National Park accommodation last Sunday (22 September).

One team searched throughout the night and more search teams were deployed early this morning.

“We have been notified by a local that the man was seen walking on a particular track. Our search has been focusing on this area and a helicopter is currently completing an aerial search. The weather conditions are not great at the moment but we hope to have our teams out as long as possible,” said Sergeant Colin Wright, Search Coordinator.

The 7 search teams today are made up of 30 people from Wanganui LandSAR and Police staff from Marton, Whanganui, Taihape, Turangi, and Taupo.

Further updates will be made once more information becomes available.
