Tomorrow Police will mark the ten year anniversary of the death of Sergeant Derek Wootton who was tragically killed on duty in Porirua in the early hours of Friday 11 July 2008.
Sergeant Wootton, 52, was working the night shift when a report was received of a serious assault and carjacking. Police patrols saw the car near Porirua and pursued it to Titahi Bay.
Derek Wootton laid road spikes in an effort to stop the car, but it hit him as it went over the spikes. Despite the efforts of colleagues and paramedics, he died at the scene.
Now, ten years on, Police staff and loved ones of Sergeant Wootton will come together for a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony at the Royal New Zealand Police College at 7:25am tomorrow.
“It’s important that we come together to commemorate and honour Derek’s life and service on the tenth anniversary of his death,” says Inspector John Spence, secretary for the Derek Wootton Memorial Trust.
“Wednesday’s service will recognise him and his service to New Zealand Police, while also providing an opportunity to reflect on the dangers and risks that come with being a Police officer.”
The Derek Wootton Memorial Trust was set up following his death to help young people achieve their goals. In the last ten years the trust has raised and distributed more than $119,000 in grants and educational scholarships.
“For the last two years grants from the trust have gone towards covering the Whitireia course fees of two young people each year,” says Mr Spence.
“We know Derek would have been a big supporter of the recipients of these grants and would be immensely proud to see them succeeding in their chosen career paths."
Also in memory of Sergeant Wootton, on Wednesday night Porirua Police are re-naming a part of Porirua Station ‘The Derek Wootton Loft’ in memory and honour of him.
