Teenager charged following Waitakiri school burglary

1 min read

Canterbury Police have been working with staff at Waitakiri School as the school has been burgled a number of times since the middle of March 2015. A witness approached a teenager last night after they recognised him from CCTV footage taken during a burglary on 3 April 2015 where a TV is reported to have been taken from a classroom. The TV was recovered by staff from the school near a fence line later that same day.

A 16 year old was arrested last night (7 April 2015) and he is due to appear in Christchurch Youth Court today (8 April 2015) charged with a number of charges including two counts of burglary.

Canterbury Police investigations into the burglaries at Waitariki School are ongoing.

Canterbury Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area surrounding the school or who may have any information that can assist this ongoing investigation.

Information can be provided by calling Canterbury Police on 03 363 7400 or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

In an emergency always call 111.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson, Canterbury Police Volume Crime Manager says "Canterbury Police work actively with organisations and victims of crime, like Waitakiri School, to put strategies in place to prevent further victimisation. CCTV is a valuable tool as it not only deters crime but help to identify offenders who commit crime. This case highlights the benefits technology can bring to an existing partnership between victims of crime and Police to bring those responsible to account."
