Two men arrested in relation to incident in Whangarei yesterday

Two men have appeared in the Whangarei District Court today in relation to an incident that closed a road down in the city for several hours yesterday.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and has been remanded in custody to appear in court on December 18.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

The incident began just before 2pm yesterday when gun shots were heard in the Maunu area. Police cordoned off Maunu Road from Western Hills Drive and Ngahere Drive.

Shortly after Police located a vehicle with two men and a firearm and the two men were taken into custody.
Police then found a man on a Willow Place property. He had serious injuries (not firearms related) and was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Police are continuing with their investigation into the incident, but believe it began with a dispute between two parties and escalated into more serious violence.
