HIGH BUT NOT DRY; the car as it is lifted from the Waikato River

Hamilton Police investigating Sunday's series of events that left a male pedestrian in hospital with serious injuries and a driver needing rescue from her car in the Waikato River are appealing for further witnesses to come forward.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson of the Hamilton CIB said investigators were reviewing security camera footage of Sunday's incident where a 43-year-old man was struck down by his female partner driving a blue car in front of shops on the corner of Ohaupo Rd and Normandy Ave.

"While this is going on our investigators are also interviewing witnesses and this is expected to take a few days.

"With the incident outside the shops and the later rescue of the woman after she drove her car into the Waikato River, it may be that there are other people who saw what happened who are yet to have been identified by Police and if you are one of these people, we would like to hear from you."

While the investigation is going on, Police have spoken to the victim and hope to interview him in the near future.

A spokesperson for his family said relatives wanted to acknowledge the courage and kindness shown by people during what they described as a tragic incident and they asked the media to respect their privacy during what is a difficult time.

Mr Patterson said members of the Wellington based Police National Dive Squad assisted with the recovery of the woman's car from the Waikato River yesterday afternoon.

"This vehicle will be the subject of a forensic examination today.

"The driver of the vehicle is yet to be interviewed by our investigators and a decision on what, if any, charges will be laid will not be made until the examination of the car and interview with witnesses have been completed."
