The Hawke's Bay Police Serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the fatal crash between a car and truck, which occurred on State Highway 2 near Awatoto, south of Napier about 11pm on Monday night.
The crash claimed the life of the driver of the car, 18-year-old Ava Powell.
A passenger in the car was seriously injured in the crash and remains in Wellington Hospital.
Both families are asking for privacy from the media during this tragic time.
