Update: Fatal fleeing driver incident

Police can now name the man who died following a fleeing driver incident in Christchurch yesterday morning. 
 
He was 64-year-old Kenneth Patrick Gerard McCaul, of Christchurch. 
 
Police extends its condolences to his family and friends. 
 
Police can also now confirm the driver who fled from Police was a 17-year-old. 
 
He is expected to be released from hospital today.
 
The four passengers, all aged in their teens, remain in a moderate condition in hospital. 
 
The officers involved are receiving support. 
 
No arrests have been made at this time. 
 
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and as such we’re unable to release further details at this stage,” says Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd. 
 
“I want to offer my sincerest condolences to the loved ones of Mr. McCaul. 
 
“Our focus as Police is on preventing harm. This is a devastating outcome and the last thing any Police officer wants to happen when they come to work.”
