Update - Papakura incident

1 min read

To be attributed to Detective Inspector Dave Lynch, Acting District Commander, Counties Manukau Police

A man has been taken to hospital with critical injuries this afternoon, following an incident in Papakura.

Police were called to the residential address at 6am this morning, after reports that a woman in the property had been seriously assaulted by a man who also had a firearm.

The woman managed to escape the property, and whilst she did not require medical treatment, she was shaken.

A large number of Police were immediately deployed to the scene.

Specialist Police staff had been negotiating closely with the man since this morning for a peaceful resolution.

Three young children were also in the house with the man and Police successfully negotiated with the man to release the children around midday.

The children are safe and all are unharmed.

At around 1.30pm a shot was heard from inside the address. When Police entered the property the man was found alone in the house with a serious injury.

No shots were fired by Police during the operation.

The man is in a critical condition at Middlemore Hospital.

It is believed that the children do not belong to the man but were known to him. They have been reunited with their family.

Police will remain at the scene as officers look to build a fuller picture of the circumstances.

All cordons have now been lifted and Police would like to thank the neighbouring community for their patience during this time.
