State Highway 29 is now closed in both directions following the fatal crash in the lower Kaimai, Bay of Plenty.
Two cars collided near McLaren Falls Road at about 3.30pm, killing one person and leaving another injured. Their status is unclear at this stage.
The road was initially partially closed but has now been closed completely while the Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.
Motorists are warned to expect delays and asked to avoid the area, where possible.
