Wanaka Police urge homeowners to check security

1 min read

Wanaka Police are reminding homeowners to make sure they secure their property after a number of burglaries in the Hedditch and Little Streets area over the past week.

Constable Mike Thomas, Wanaka Community Prevention Officer, is urging residents to double check their property security including doors, windows, garages, sheds and cars.

“There are some simple actions residents can take to help prevent their property being targeted such as ensuring all windows and doors are shut, and you are using all locks if they are installed,” says Constable Thomas. “Securing your property, especially if you are heading away for a longer period of time, will help to deter offenders trying to gain access to your items.”

There have been three incidents over the last two days including a burglary yesterday where a mountain bike was taken and another two burglaries this morning where houses were entered and valuables targeted.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has any information about either of these. We’d also urge any member of the public to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

Anyone with information can contact the Wanaka Police station on 03 443 7272. Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

More information about how to secure your property is available on the Police website and includes some helpful videos on how to “Protect your stuff”: http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-community/protect-property-vehicles.
