A 32-year-old wanted man from Nelson has been arrested following a fleeing driver incident across the Canterbury District this afternoon.

At around 12.07pm in Waikari, near Culverden, Police attempted to stop a vehicle the man was thought to be travelling in.

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated, it was abandoned for safety reasons a short time later.

The vehicle was then used in a petrol drive off in Parklands in Christchurch.

Following this Police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

It was abandoned shortly after for safety reasons.

At about 2.45pm Police received information the man was at an address in rural Ashburton.

Local Police cordoned the address and the Armed Offenders Squad was called in.  The man left the address in a vehicle before the Armed Offenders Squad arrived.

The driver failed to stop again near the intersection of Beach Road and River Road and another pursuit was initiated through Ashburton, the vehicle came to a stop in Tinwald and the driver was arrested without incident.

Senior Sergeant Phillip Dean says thankfully no one was injured during the incident, but any driver who fails to stop for Police puts themselves and others at risk.

“This behaviour is reckless, dangerous and the man involved put the lives of innocent members of our community in danger as well as our staff.”

“Police would like to thank members of the public who were affected by this ongoing operation for their cooperation.”

The man has been taken to Christchurch Police Station and is currently being interviewed.
