There's something you don't see every day.
With a southern right whale making a splash in Wellington Harbour this week, the Wellington Police Maritime Unit went out to make sure the beastie was enjoying its visit to the capital unimpeded by whale-botherers.
The Lady Elizabeth IV kept a respectful distance and the crew were able to report that, despite the media coverage and high level of interest, no one was getting too close and the whale appeared untroubled by the attention.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) reminds whale-watchers to keep at least 50m away from the tohora, which they said today showed no signs of being unwell or distressed.
No more than three vessels at one time - including small boats and kayaks - and/or aircraft are allowed within 300m of any marine mammal. Swimming with whales is not permitted.
This is the first reported sighting of a southern right whale in Wellington Harbour since 2010 - though in the days before hunting the species bred in the harbour and one early visitor even complained their noise was keeping him awake.
