There was plenty of coffee and conversation as Napier locals took the opportunity to sit down with police officers for a friendly chat.
The initiative is a partnership between Police in Hawke’s Bay, Safer Napier and Napier City Council and aims to give the community easy access to police outside of the formal police station setting.
Four cafes across Napier were chosen, with officers stationed at each and giving out free coffees to those keen to have a chat.
While some attendees raised concerns about homelessness in their neighbourhoods, others sought advice about speeding vehicles exiting the motorway or followed up on matters they had previously reported to Police.
Local children also came prepared with plenty of questions. Among them was a young girl with aspirations of becoming a police officer, who attended the event for the second year in a row.
Ahuriri Community Relations Coordinator Sergeant Blair Benson says it was a valuable opportunity to connect with the community.
“It was great to have so many positive conversations, and a number of people took the time to thank police for the work we do,” says Blair.
