It is well known that holding a driver's licence creates opportunities.

Well, those opportunities are being realised across Auckland City District through great community-based programmes.

Acting Sergeant Ryan Tiakia, District Pacific Liaison Co-ordinator, has invested his time in one of those programmes to help participants from Pacific churches achieve their learner licence.

Last month the first learner driver's licence workshop was held at the Onehunga Library over three evenings, with participants aged between 16 and 50.

It was very successful, with 24 of the 25 participants studying then passing the test to obtain their learner's licence.

“A number of our participants have previously failed their learner licence test and were afraid to re-sit," says Ryan. "This course provided a comfortable and supportive environment to help to calm their nerves and achieve obtaining their licence."
