People of Police - Stephanie, senior media advisor

Inspired by the Humans of New York photoblog, we’re showcasing some of the incredible stories and experience of people throughout our organisation – both sworn and non-constabulary staff.

Stephanie - Senior Media Advisor

I grew up in a Police family but, having never seriously considered pulling on the uniform, I chose a different career path – journalism. After studying media and sociology at Victoria University and journalism at Massey, I got a job at the New Zealand Press Association.

Four years later, I switched gears and went to parliament as a press secretary. And then, in 2018, I joined Police as a Senior Media Advisor in the media team based at Police National Headquarters.

The media team provides media outlets and the public with information about Police activities. We also support our staff to speak directly to media about incidents or issues within their areas of responsibility.

We operate in shifts seven days a week and handle 150 to 200 queries from journalists around the country (and sometimes around the world) every day - everything from the basic details of a car crash to Police policy, operations and large-scale events.

I’ve been deployed to a number of significant incidents, including the March 15 terror attacks in Christchurch and the Whakaari / White Island eruption in late 2019. These events were a personal reminder of how important it is for Police to communicate effectively and efficiently to help ensure New Zealanders are not only safe, but feel safe.

I feel extremely lucky to be part of the Police family and work so closely alongside people who dedicate their lives to the safety and security of others.
