Hawke’s Bay came alive to the sounds of the pipes over the weekend and two Police bands were front and centre.

The National Pipe Band Champs were held in Hawke’s Bay with the New Zealand Police Pipe Band (NZPPB) from Wellington and the Auckland Police Pipe Band (APPB) both competing.

While the NZPPB has no serving Police staff, the Auckland band includes five police officers and employees.

The event included a spectacular street march in Napier on Friday afternoon, which involved 47 bands.

The competition continued on Saturday at the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hastings, with all bands performing sets and medleys.

The NZPPB was placed fifth overall and won the best overall bass section, while the APPB was placed second in the Dress section on Saturday and first in Drumming in the street march.
