A big shout-out to our Auckland City staff whose quick thinking and teamwork helped rescue three puppies from harm.

Police received reports of a man threatening to harm puppies near Parnell railway station on Sunday evening.

CCTV operators picked up the job straight away and tracked the man’s movements, spotting him allegedly putting the puppies into a bag and punching them.

Thanks to the fast coordination between camera operators and frontline units, the man was quickly located and arrested without incident on Cheshire Street.

Constables Ivan Teo and Ashton Dawber-Ashley took the puppies into custody and transported them safely to the Auckland City Police Hub, before handing them into the care of Animal Management for ongoing support.

The 44-year-old man has since been charged under the Animal Welfare Act for ill-treatment of animals.

“It’s hard to understand why someone would want to hurt such young pups,” says Senior Sergeant Dave Plunkett.

“We’re incredibly proud of the way our staff responded, from the initial call to the arrest and the care of the puppies.

"Their actions made a real difference.”
