A spate of recent burglaries at Tai Poutini Polytechnic's Student Accommodation left multiple students without their trusty mechanical steeds and their key mode of transport around town.

But thanks to Greymouth Police, the students didn’t have to go without their bikes for long.

After some thorough initial investigation work and engagement with the students by Constable Damon Subritzky, Public Safety Team 5 (PST5) recovered 11 bicycles stolen in the Polytechnic burglaries along with other items - accounting for all but a few of the things that originally went ‘missing’.

The students were absolutely stoked when Greymouth Police showed up with the trailer loaded with the bicycles.

Constable Jordan Baty, a member of Greymouth’s PST5, said the students were blown away when they arrived with the bikes.

“It was definitely a ‘proud to be a cop’ moment.”

The bicycles and other stolen items, with an estimated value of around $25,000, were recovered as part of a search warrant executed on the West Coast.

The suspect has been attributed with the theft of a further three bicycles in a separate incident and now has multiple charges pending.
