Scam season

A man is targeting elderly people with a false story about being burgled and needing money for baby formula.

Papanui Police know of at least one 80 year old who believed the `sob' story and gave $500 to the man who appears to be going to elderly people. Elderly people tend to be trusting and want to help the man says Sergeant Nicky Lindley of Northern Area Intelligence section.

"He says he has lost $600 in a burglary and needs money to buy baby formula,"she says. "He then gives a `receipt' with his `name', `address' and promises to repay. Of course none of this is true."

Police have received a report of one incident in Marshland Road and another in Ilam Road.

"Do not give anyone who comes to your door, money or goods. Do not let them enter your house to use a phone or get a glass of water or any other pretense they offer," Sergeant Lindley says.

The man is described as a caucasian, between 20- 30 years old, slim build, olive complexion and perhaps has an accent.

If you are approached, please contact police immediately asks Nicky Lindley.

"Please call Papanui Police or the main police number, 363 7400 so we can identify this person," she says.
